Foundation–10 Curriculum

Update: English as an Additional Language

In June 2018, the VCAA provided stakeholders with the opportunity to provide feedback on a proposed new English as an Additional Language (EAL) curriculum. The VCAA thanks the wide range of stakeholders who took the opportunity to review the proposed curriculum and to provide their considered feedback.

Consultation indicated a range of responses to the proposed curriculum.

Teachers of students for whom English is an Additional Language are advised to continue to use the 2013 EAL Companion to AusVELS (originally released in 2000).

Teachers may also access pedagogical support provided by the Department of Education and Training in the EAL Developmental Continuum P–10.

Have your say about Victorian Curriculum F–10 implementation

The VCAA invites teachers, curriculum leaders and principals to undertake a 10-minute survey about their experience of implementing the Victorian Curriculum F–10. This is a great opportunity for Victorian schools to provide their insights and feedback about using the Victorian Curriculum F–10 and associated resources.

The survey is administered for the VCAA by Learning First, an independent, internationally renowned evaluation company. The information gathered will help the VCAA identify what aspects of curriculum implementation are working well, and the ways in which the VCAA could provide schools with additional support.

The survey is open until Friday 21 September 2018.

All information collected and analysed by Learning First is held under privacy and confidentiality protocols and is de-identified before it is released to the VCAA.

Some schools have already received a survey link directly from Learning First. There is no need for these schools to complete the survey again.

Following the first online session with Aunty Fay Steward-Muir, a respected Boon Wurrung Elder and language specialist, the VCAA will present 'Paralysis of Integrity: I want to teach Aboriginal perspectives but I don't want to offend anyone' for a second time. This discussion forum, co-hosted by Aunty Fay and Dr Julie Reid, Victorian Aboriginal Languages Program Manager at the VCAA, invites participants to ask questions and engage in an open dialogue.

You can register online to attend this interactive session, which will be held from 3.45 to 4.45pm on Wednesday 29 August.

Free online language assessments available

The VCAA is offering F–10 Language teachers access to a suite of free, online language assessments. Developed in partnership with Australian Council for Education Research (ACER), the VCAA Language Assessments are available for Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Modern Greek and Spanish languages.

The online language assessments:

  • support the teaching of Victorian Curriculum F–10 Languages from Levels 5–6 onward
  • provide a useful diagnostic tool for students' listening and reading skills
  • are an online bank of validated test items, available anytime
  • provide teachers with immediate results
  • are available at no cost to all Victorian schools.

Feedback from teachers about the usefulness of the language assessment resources has been overwhelmingly positive. Teachers reported that the assessments were easy to set up and administer, they liked being able to obtain instant results, and the assessments complemented other forms of assessment they use.

More information is available from the Victorian Curriculum F–10 assessment resources webpage or teachers can go directly to the ACER website to register and begin to use the resources.
