F-10 Assessment

Foundation–10 Assessment

NAPLAN student reports

The NAPLAN 2018 reporting packages included:

  • a covering letter
  • a confidential report for each student who participated in the NAPLAN 2018 tests for schools to distribute to parents/carers
  • an instruction sheet with information on accessing NAPLAN Writing test images.

The Individual student report brochure (pdf - 265.14kb) for parents is available from the VCAA website.

As in previous years, student reports include information such as:

  • individual student results for all NAPLAN tests on the 10-band National Achievement Scale
  • an indicator for each assessment area showing the national average and the middle 60% of national results
  • a written description for each assessment area identifying the types of skills assessed
  • a summary table describing the skills and understandings students are likely to demonstrate in each of the bands.

Each 2018 ISR also provides an indication of whether the student completed each test on paper or online.

A note about 2018 Writing results

Marking of online writing scripts was not completed within the Online National Assessment Platform used to deliver the online tests. This results in anomalous reporting of Year 5, Year 7 and Year 9 online Writing within the Student and School Summary Report (SSSR). More details regarding reporting of online Writing results can be found on pages 9 and 10 of How to Interpret the SSSR (pdf - 5.86mb).

All Writing results are accurately presented in the data service reports and in the printed Individual Student Reports.

On average, students or schools who completed Year 9 Writing online achieved a result of 10 to 15 scale score points higher than those of similar ability who completed the test on paper. This is approximately one-quarter of a NAPLAN band and any comparison with results from paper testing need to take this into consideration. Results for online and paper tests at Year 5 and Year 7 are comparable.

Access to students' NAPLAN Writing test images

Victorian schools can access images of their students' NAPLAN Writing test responses via the NAPLAN Test Administration website.

Please note that schools have access only to images of the Writing tests of their own students and that the images are made available strictly for internal school use. Students who were exempt or withdrawn from the NAPLAN Writing test will not have images available on the website. It is important that all protocols set out in the Conditions governing the release of images of NAPLAN writing test responses to schools are followed.

Access to the images will be available until the end of Term 4.

Details about access to the website and instructions on how to download images have been sent to school principals with the NAPLAN reporting packages.

NAPLAN 2018 Data Service professional development workshops

As in previous years, a series of NAPLAN Data Service professional development workshops for principals, NAPLAN coordinators and teachers will be conducted throughout Term 4. These workshops are conducted free of charge at various locations around metropolitan and regional Victoria.

Details of times and locations for these workshops, and information on how to register for them will be available on the VCAA website by the beginning of Term 4.

NAPLAN Data Service

Access to the NAPLAN Data Service reports was made available to schools on Thursday 30 August 2018. These reports include all school and state data, and some national data. As in previous years, national data relating to subgroups will be incorporated into the Data Service after the release by ACARA of the final NAPLAN report later in the year.

Schools must use their unique login and security password to access their results. Login details and 2018 passwords were sent to schools in August. If a password is lost, the principal should send an email to vcaa.naplan.help@edumail.vic.gov.au with the words 'Password Request' in the subject line.

The full suite of NAPLAN Data Service reports can be accessed by schools where students completed the tests on paper. Most Data Service reports will also be available for schools with students who completed the tests online. These schools will also have access to a Student and School Summary Report (SSSR), which can be downloaded from the NAPLAN Data Service. Information on how to interpret the SSSR can be found on the NAP website.

The 2018 Reporting Guide for paper-based tests is available via a link on the Report Parameters page of the Data Service:

Transition to NAPLAN Online

This year more than 100 Victorian schools had students who successfully completed the 2018 NAPLAN tests online. Student results from the online tests are reported on the same scale as those from the paper-based tests.

Around 1000 schools in Victoria are undertaking School Readiness Testing (SRT) in preparation for the 2019 online tests. The VCAA thanks all schools taking part in the SRT.
