Professional learning: Introducing the Victorian Curriculum F–10 and assessment

Starting in early March and running throughout Semester 1, we are hosting a series of webinars on the Victorian Curriculum F–10 and assessment. Designed for teachers new to the curriculum, each webinar will focus on a specific curriculum area, and will cover topics such as the sound principles of assessment, using the curriculum to support assessment of student learning, and assessment and reporting. Each webinar will provide opportunities for participants to ask questions directly to the relevant VCAA Curriculum Manager.

Bushfire Education website has moved

The Bushfire Education website, which has lesson plans and resources aligned to the Victorian Curriculum, has moved and is now accessible via our website.

Organised under the themes of learning about, preparing for, responding to and recovering from bushfires, the aim of the lesson plans is to better prepare all young Australians for the challenges of living in a country that regularly experiences bushfires. Each lesson plan has a specific learning intention and links to the relevant curriculum areas and additional resources.

The Elements of Dance and The Elements of Drama posters, F–10

These 10 downloadable Dance posters and eight downloadable Drama posters have been designed to support the learning of Dance and Drama in primary and secondary classrooms. Dance and Drama are learnt through developing skills and knowledge associated with the elements of dance (such as space, time and dynamics) and the elements of drama (such as character, focus and movement). The posters make visible the basic concepts and vocabulary associated with these elements.

Teachers and schools are encouraged to download, print and display the A3 posters.

Geography: Using geospatial technologies videos

This series of videos provides teachers with an understanding of how to integrate geospatial technology tools into teaching and learning programs for Victorian Curriculum F–10 Geography. Each video shows how three or more geospatial technology tools can be used in an example scenario related to content descriptions in the Geography curriculum. The videos demonstrate how teachers can integrate these tools into their teaching and learning programs, incorporating locations that support their particular school context.

Health and Physical Education learning modules, F–6: Tell us what you think

We have produced a series of innovative learning modules to support primary school teachers to plan, implement and assess using the F–6 Health and Physical Education curriculum.

Teachers can work through the four modules at their own pace. Each module begins with an introduction to the topic, followed by two or more video presentations and a resources page with links to readings and other third-party resources. Some modules have a non-compulsory quiz to test your knowledge and understanding.

We encourage primary schools and HPE teachers to explore these targeted resources, either completing each module sequentially or selecting those that are most appropriate to their professional learning needs.

New annotated work samples for Home Economics, F–10

These annotated Home Economics student work samples accompany the sample units of work and associated summative assessment tasks published in 2021. These resources have been designed to show how Home Economics teaching and learning programs can draw on both the Design and Technologies and Health and Physical Education curriculum areas of the Victorian Curriculum F–10.

Each student work sample is assessed against an assessment rubric that is explicitly linked to the Design and Technologies and Health and Physical Education curriculum areas, and is accompanied by a breakdown of the student’s learning and an explanation of what they will be ready to learn next.

New resources to help unpack the Languages curriculum, F–10

These new easy-to-use Languages resources contain ideas and advice to help teachers unpack content descriptions and achievement standards from the Victorian Curriculum F–10 Languages curriculum.

Each resource addresses either Levels F–6 or 7–10 in an example Language (for example, Modern Greek) and includes example activities based around one central theme (for example, Celebrations). Teachers of any Language can adapt these examples and develop units of work tailored to a related theme specific to their chosen language and culture.

New Science resources that explore biological sciences in local and Victorian contexts, F–6

This new sample learning resource to support the Science curriculum, F–6 includes learning activities, detailed tasks and case studies based on local and Victorian contexts – from exploring the variations that occur in local and other Victorian frog species to investigating the effects of drought on farms and farm animals in rural Victoria.

Learning science concepts in relation to local and relevant contexts supports students in making connections and links to scientific ideas in the physical world. It helps them to see the ‘why’ behind their learning and provides a rationale for exploring and understanding the world around them.

More Science resources to support the understanding of forces and motion

Access a new Levels 7 and 8 Science resource to support the understanding of forces and motion This resource joins the suite of F–6 resources published in 2021. It features hands-on classroom learning activities to help students explore how forces can act to cause a change in motion and learn more about the concept of balanced and unbalanced forces.

An accompanying overview document demonstrates how student learning from Foundation to Level 10 fits into the broader forces and motion story, plus unpacks some common student misconceptions about forces and motion.
