School-based and part-time apprenticeships and traineeships

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships

A school-based apprenticeship or traineeship (SBAT) is an apprenticeship or traineeship undertaken by a student enrolled in a senior secondary program (VCE or VCAL), with at least one day per week timetabled to be spent on the job or in training during the normal school week.

An SBAT combines:

  • part-time, practical experience in the workplace
  • recognised, structured training with a Registered Training Organisation.

SBATs must meet the guidelines published by the Department of Education and Training

These arrangements attract Victorian Skills First funding.

Part-time apprenticeships and traineeships

Students who undertake an apprenticeship or traineeship that is not integrated into their school timetable will be undertaking a part-time apprenticeship or traineeship.

This type of arrangement will still provide credit into the VCE or VCAL if it is recorded on the VASS.

These arrangements do not require school endorsement.

No government funding is provided to the RTO, either through the Victorian Skills First or through school funding, to subsidise training associated with part-time apprenticeships and traineeships.

VASS Administration

SBAT enrolments are recorded on the VASS against either a NAP or VFE version of the qualification:

  • NAP: The VASS certificate type denoting VCAA-approved school-based or part-time apprenticeships or traineeships that provide credit towards the VCE in the form of VCE VET units and nominal hour credit towards VCAL. NAPs are available for apprenticeship/traineeship qualifications that are in the same industry area as a VCAA-approved VCE VET program.
  • VFE: The VASS certificate type denoting approved VET qualifications other than those that form all or part of a VCE VET program and which provide credit towards the VCE through block credit recognition. School-based or part-time apprenticeships or traineeships that are not designated as NAPs appear on the VASS as VFE qualifications. VASS administrators must tick the SBAT flag box when enrolling school-based or part-time apprentices/trainees into VFE qualifications.

Note: Enrolments into a qualification being undertaken as an apprenticeship or traineeship may be processed on the VASS at any stage of the year up until the ENROLMENT 5 deadline in November. No apprenticeship or traineeship enrolment data is considered by the Victorian Goverment, Catholic or Independent sectors for school-based VET funding determined at the ENROLMENT 2 deadline. See the VCAA's Important Administrative Dates for current information regarding ENROLMENT dates.
